SECTION 1: General Information

1. Name of test:

 

North-Chiang Mai University Test of English for Graduate Studies (NCU-TEGS)

3. Test duration:

3 hours:

  • First 35 minutes are for listening part.
  • 145 minutes left, a test taker can take any parts left.

 

4. Test schedule:

The test will be held on every second Friday of every month, 09.00 - 12.00 (9 am. - 12 pm.). The first test will be held onsite on Monday, September 20th, 2021.

 

5. Test fee:*

 

 

North-Chiang Mai University student and employee:

600 Baht

 

Student at other educational institutions

and general applicant/non-student:

 

1,200 Baht

 

* No refunds will be given for any cases.

7. Test venue:

North-Chiang Mai University, Building 4, floor 4, Room 040404 (Lab 3)

 

8. The limit of the number of test takers:

NCU-TEGS testing will be held if there are at least 5 and not excess 30 applicants (5 – 30 applicants). In case there are lower than 5 or excess 30 applicants, NCU-TEGS Testing Center will move those applicants to the next test in the basis of first come, first served. However, the management of the number of test takers depends on NCU-TEGS Testing Center’s discretion; and in any cases, the center will inform the applicants at least 3 days before testing date.

 

9. Rules and regulations for test takers:

 

9.1  The door will open at 8.45 am. and close at 9.15 am. A test taker will not be allowed to take the test for late arrival and be considered as absence from the test.

 

9.2  A test applicant who does not show up on the test date will be considered as absence from the test.

 

9.3  A test taker must bring your receipt and originally valid Identification Card (National ID Card for Thai applicant) or NCU Student ID Card to the test room. In case of non-NCU-student foreigner, you must bring your originally valid passport that includes your full name exactly match the name filled out in the application form.

 

9.4  No personal belongings, all electronic devices, food and drinks allowed in the test room, except pen and correction fluid. However, you can leave your belongings at provided area and please turn off your cell phone (if any) before leaving it.

 

9.5  Test takers are not allowed to open the test papers before allowing, and be careful of reading test explanation and strictly comply.

 

9.6  A test taker who is found cheating or attempting to cheat will not be marked the answer sheet.

 

9.7  Test takers must stay at the seat after the end of the examination until all related test materials have been collected by the invigilator/s.

 

9.8  NCU-TEGS is authorized by North-Chiang Mai University. No part of this test may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means.

 

9.9  Dress Code: Formal Casual

 

10. Test result announcement:

within 7 days after testing date through email

 

11. Test validity:

NCU-TEGS final result is valid for a period of two years after testing date.

 

 

 

 

 

SECTION 2: Test Result Assessment

 

NCU-TEGS has total score 80 and determines the criteria for test result assessment in compliance with the standard of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) as follows:

In this case, a test taker has to register for taking the course: Academic English for Graduate Studies (45 hours).

In this case, a test taker has to register for taking 2 courses respectively:

1. Foundation English for Graduate Studies

2. Academic English for Graduate Studies

 

 

Graduate students must get B1 or more that is considered to pass the test as per NCU criteria, without taking any course. In case a graduate student who gets lower than B1 must register to take either or both 2 provided courses as follows:

            Case 1: The student who gets lower than 24 points (or 0 – 23 points) is considered to fail the test and has to register to take both 2 courses provided as follows:

(1) Foundation English for Graduate Studies, and

(2) Academic English for Graduate Studies

Case 2: The student who gets A2 (or 24 – 31 points) is considered to fail the test and has to register to take just 1 course provided that is Academic English for Graduate Studies.

 

 

SECTION 3: The Details of Short Courses for Developing English

 

1. Course provided:

            NCU-TEGS Testing Center provides 2 courses for developing English for NCU graduate students, including general/non-student public, that are as follows:

1.1    Foundation English for Graduate Studies: This course is fundamental English that aims to develop 4 English skills: speaking, listening, readind, and writing.

1.2    Academic English for Graduate Studies:  This upper level still aims to develop 4 English skills but focuses on academic English.

 

2. Condition for course registration:

            Divided into 2 cases as follows:

2.1    In case of being NCU graduate students: In case a graduate student does not pass the test as per NCU criteria that has to register for taking 1 or 2 course/s provided, as the case may be. The student who has registered for taking a course must complete such course, and cannot apply for taking NCU-TEGS during taking a course, except in case the student has to take both 2 courses and can complete the first course; in this case, the student can apply for taking the test before taking the other course. If the student can pass such test, the student is not required to take the other course; but if the student cannot pass such test, the student still has to take the other course for completing as per NCU criteria.

         However, if a graduate student has passed NCU-TEGS and would like to take either or both 2 courses in order to develop English skills, the student can do that as well as in case of being general/non-student public.

2.2    In case of being general/non-student public: Those who would like to develop English skills are able to register for taking either or both 2 courses without prerequisite condition.

 

3. Course duration: 45 hours

            You are informed that openning the course/s will be considered by North-Chiang Mai University that depends on the number of registrants.

 

4. Study result assessment: 60% or more

 

5. Tuition fee: 4,500 Baht per course
